Becoming an expert in any field is not an overnight achievement. But we all hope at some point to gain the confidence and skill to excel in our chosen endeavor. So it was when I started my network marketing business many years ago. As I was getting started, I tried hard to focus on the concept of being “the messenger” instead of trying to be “the message.” That meant that I was to leverage the knowledge and skill of my mentors until I was able to move up the success ladder towards becoming an expert. Using this approach made it easier for my initial prospects (close friends and family) to receive the information that I was so enthusiastic about.
As I worked my way up the various levels of my business I was determined to have the ability to parachute in to any city and get a perfect stranger registered in a matter of days. Yes, really. I heard that “parachute” scenario once and I couldn’t shake that visual! It turns out that the learning curve included many peaks and valleys and the process, although simple, took longer than I wanted.
Over time I did make thousands of friendships as I achieved success in the process of becoming the expert with “the message.” Success meant everything from counseling and coaching to running functions and even speaking at events with audiences in the thousands. It truly was an amazing experience.
I have since entered a new chapter in my life and started my own business in the digital marketing space, as a result of my graphic design background and those early entrepreneurial days. And often I look back to evaluate the things I could have improved during those years that would have helped me gain more success today. These ideas here not only apply to network marketers but ALL business owners . So pay attention! I’m here to save you time and help you get better results, so you don’t make the same mistakes!
I was not keeping in touch with the prospects I made. This caused me to miss out on countless opportunities. Now remember…years ago select few had an email address or mobile phone and no one had email on their mobile phone! The lack of technology was a barrier back then but I should have figured out a way to keep in touch. I mean why not make the most of every effort and contact that I had made. Even snail mail would have been better than nothing.
But you have no excuse today.
I should have been cultivating all those wonderful relationships over the years by collecting the names, email addresses, and phone numbers of everyone I met.
Think about it. People like to do business with those that they know, like, and trust. So all those friends that knew, like (I’m hoping!), and trusted me then would have been great to connect with today.
“What if you could post messages or videos to share your thoughts and receive feedback from your audience quickly and easily?”
“What if you kept the contact information from every person you met, put that in a database, and keep in touch with them by adding value to their lives, while occasionally marketing to them?”
And, “What if, on your quest to becoming the expert, you were able to provide your readers with terrific articles and compelling content from your mentors and over time establish yourself as the expert voice with your products and services?”
Sound too good to be true? The technology is already in place.
The first step is to become “the messenger” to your audience by leveraging your mentors’ knowledge with social media channels. Set up your business profiles on Facebook and Twitter. Be consistent and authentic.
